Floyd Mayweather Retires With $1B In Earnings And Manny Pacquiao With $500 Million Proving Boxing Is A Lucrative Sport

Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather after May 2, 2015 fight

The career earnings of recently retired 39-year-old boxer, Floyd Mayweather, is approximately $1 billion dollars. The career earnings of Mayweather's top rival, 37-year-old Manny Pacquiao, who announced his retirement as well, is approximately $500,000,0000, according to an article published on the Forbes website. Those are staggering figures for any athlete in any sport. There are a number of other boxers who have become multi-millionaires from boxing as well.

Some may scoff at earning a living from boxing, but many athletes have used the sport to support themselves and their families quite well. They've proven boxing can be a great source of income. It takes hard work, dedication, discipline and practice, but it can be done. It also takes good business management. When some people hear and read about the big financial figures being tossed about, it sometimes brings out the greed and envy in them and they try to rip boxers off. So, you have to be careful. Know what you are signing and how your money is being collected and spent.

There are things you can do to help and protect yourself. My dad, a former professional athlete and coach, is of the belief it is a good idea that young boxers seek out the knowledge and assistance of older, veteran boxers. His advice regarding the subject is, "Find a good, old boxer." They can give you tips on life inside and outside the ring, in sharing their experiences. Many of them enjoy being in boxing gyms and soaking up the atmosphere, long after they've retired. Talk to them and see what you can learn.

Timothy Bradley and Manny Pacquiao during April 9, 2016 fight

Mayweather, for instance, had the benefit of his father and uncles, former professional boxers, training and guiding him. It made a big difference. He benefited from their experiences in the ring. Mike Tyson was trained by boxing veteran, Cus D'Amato, who was a boxer and had decades of experience as a trainer when he took Tyson under his wing. Current world champ, Tyson Fury, was trained by his dad, a former boxer (as well as his uncle Peter Fury) and he gained from their experiences. There are tricks of the trade and when you have someone who has been through it helping you with your career, it will benefit you.

Be careful listening to friends who are not knowledgeable on the sport. They may mean well (while some are just hanging around hoping you'll make money and acquire other material things they can get) but if they don't know the sport and they are trying to assist in training you, they could be telling you things that will lead to you forming bad boxing habits that could cause you trouble in the ring. Keep your practices and form textbook correct, punch perfect.

Even though you are just starting your career, you have to think ahead. Don't do things now that you will regret later. I've often written in this column that entertainers and athletes need to keep their image as family friendly as possible, because it sets a good example and will lead to endorsements that can support you and your family. People make millions of dollars from endorsements alone (this is on top of purse money). So, stay out of trouble and be careful of what you post on social networking.

Floyd Mayweather: By The Numbers

May 2, 2015 @ 06:49 PM 48,556 views - Floyd Mayweather (47-0) faces Manny Pacquiao (57-5-2) in the “Fight of the Century” Saturday night from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The sports world has waited nearly six years for boxing’s two biggest stars to square off in the ring with many figuring it would never happen thanks to the animosity between the camps of the two champions. But the money was too much to resist for all parties involved and off we go. Win or lose, no one will make off better financially on Saturday than Mayweather. He stands to make at least $150 million from the bout cementing his place on top of the world’s highest-paid athletes.

$99.99: Record cost of Saturday’s fight in HD. Standard definition is $89.99.

$400,000: Value of Rolex watch Mayweather received from the MGM Grand as a gift.

$750,000: Cost for Mayweather to get out of his Top Rank contract in 2006. It was the best investment in the history of boxing.

2.48 million: Record PPV buys for his 2007 fight against Oscar De La Hoya.

$25 million:  Mayweather has earned at least $25 million for each of his past 10 fights. Saturday night marks No. 11.

$153 million: Record PPV revenue for Mayweather-Alvarez.

$200 million: The amount Mayweather says he will make from Saturday’s fight. He’s being a tad optimistic unless the PPV buys go nuts. Mayweather posted on Instagram in 2014 that he would make $70 million from his first Marcos Maidana fight after the PPV money was counted. Mayweather made $32 million.

$420 million: Mayweather’s career earnings ahead of Saturday’s fight.

$873 million: TV revenue generated from Mayweather’s 13 PPV fights, which ranks first all-time. He’ll move past $1 billion Saturday night.

Manny Pacquiao Set To Retire After Bradley Fight With $500 Million In Career Earnings

Apr 9, 2016 @ 10:00 AM 22,269 views - Update: Pacquiao won a unanimous decision against Bradley and reiterated that he is retired “as of now.” Manny Pacquiao squares off in the ring against Timothy Bradley Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao says it will be his final bout, although many are skeptical, including his trainer Freddie Roach and long-time promoter Bob Arum. Pacquiao reiterated his stance at Wednesday’s press conference as he plans to focus on his political career with a senate election on the docket next month in the Philippines. “This is my last fight,” he said.

If it is the end of the road, Saturday’s fight will wrap an extraordinary run where Pacquiao rose from living in a cardboard shack in the Philippines to one of the most marketable and bankable athletes on the planet who won world titles in a record eight divisions. The result after Saturday: Pacquiao will have earned $500 million from boxing purses and endorsements during his two-decade professional career...

Amir Khan Wins Bout Against Boxer Chris Algieri And Wants To Fight Floyd Mayweather For The Undefeated Pugilist's Last Match

Khan v. Algieri

This is a follow up to the April 6, 2015 article "Amir Khan Dodging Boxers Kell Brook And Timothy Bradley" where the Judiciary Report stated, "If Khan loses to undefeated Brook, his chances of fighting the retiring Mayweather or resurgent Pacquiao are greatly diminished. They will seek to fight Brook instead. Fighting formerly undefeated Algieri is less of a risk. Pacquiao gave a roadmap on how to beat Algieri in his recent win against him and Khan will use that blueprint."

Chris Algieri and Amir Khan

So said, so done. Two months later, Khan used Pacquiao's blueprint and beat Algieri in a unanimous decision this past weekend in New York. The fight was watched by 1,200,000 viewers on the Spike cable channel in America. It's not pay-per-view, which is far more lucrative, but it is still a large audience for a smaller transmission fee in television rights.

Amir Khan

Khan is once again seeking to fight Mayweather, who has one fight left before retirement. However, a bout with Khan would not be the most lucrative for Mayweather's last fight (unless he decides he is not going to retire, as he is still in top physical condition and fighting well). A rematch against Filipino boxing star, Manny Pacquiao, would be the most lucrative bout, garnering another huge payday, after Mayweather won during their first outing in May. Still, one can't blame Khan for trying.

Amir Khan Dodging Boxers Kell Brook And Timothy Bradley

Amir Khan

The IBF declared American pugilist, Timothy Bradley, the mandatory Amir Khan must fight in an eliminator bout, where the winner would take on undefeated welterweight titleholder, Kell Brook. Khan declined the fight in a move that has tongues wagging. Bradley beat Filipino legend, Manny Pacquiao, due to controversial scoring, but was defeated in the subsequent rematch.

Fellow British boxer, Kell Brook, has been requesting a fight against Khan, but he has repeatedly dodged him at every turn. Brook and his team offered Khan $7,500,000 for a May 2015 title fight at London’s famed Wembley stadium, but he declined. Last week, Khan announced he would instead fight American boxer, Chris Algieri, who was recently defeated by Pacquiao.

How Amir Khan is looking at Kell Brook and his team (LOL)

Brook became angry at the announcement stating, "If someone said to me you can get five million quid, a world title, fight at Wembley with a fight that every fan wants to see, it's a no-brainer for me. He's fighting Algieri who didn't win a round against Pacquiao, a feather puncher, not a big puncher. It doesn't make sense to me. I'm world champion, I'm calling him out, we want the fight, there's a word title and a bagful of money and it doesn't make sense that he's fighting this guy who's bringing nothing to the table."

Brook believes Khan's declination of the fight against him does not make sense. However, to Khan it does and for this reason. Khan wants to fight top dogs Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, as they are the most famous in the division, guaranteeing the biggest payday as well. In boxing it is a big deal to be able to state you fought Mayweather and or Pacquiao. Those are historic bragging rights. If Khan loses to undefeated Brook, his chances of fighting the retiring Mayweather or resurgent Pacquiao are greatly diminished. They will seek to fight Brook instead.

Kell Brook

Fighting formerly undefeated Algieri is less of a risk. Pacquiao gave a road map on how to beat Algieri in his recent win against him and Khan will use that blueprint. There is no blueprint for beating Brook, as he is undefeated. There exists too much risk for Khan to fight Brook at this time due to these facts (even though the Judiciary Report is of the belief Brook vs. Khan in London this summer would be a fantastic fight that deserves to be made).

As stated in past articles, in boxing all it takes is one punch to mess up a career (then comes the arduous but workable rebuilding after such a defeat). Brook needs to focus on getting an audience with Mayweather and or Pacquiao and not wait around for Khan. Try to get a fight with the legends as well.

Kell Brook vents frustration: Khan-Algieri makes no sense

By Wil Esco on Apr 3, 2015, 10:49a 151- Kell Brook admits he's frustrated with the whole Amir Khan situation, and thinks the Algieri fight isn't worth a damn. The back and forth between Kell Brook and Amir Khan seems to be a never-ending saga that has gone on for years now. Ever since Brook picked up the IBF welterweight title, thinking that would give him the standing to demand a Khan fight, the war of words started heating up. When Amir Khan announced yesterday that he would be fighting Chris Algieri next, Brook wasn't at all pleased.

"If someone said to me you can get five million quid, a world title, fight at Wembley with a fight that every fan wants to see, it's a no-brainer for me," 28-year-old Brook told BBC 5 Live."

"He's fighting Algieri who didn't win a round against [Manny] Pacquiao, a feather puncher, not a big puncher. It doesn't make sense to me. I'm world champion, I'm calling him out, we want the fight, there's a word title and a bagful of money and it doesn't make sense that he's fighting this guy who's bringing nothing to the table."...

IBF Confirms Khan Turned Down Bradley Title Eliminator

Amir Khan, 30-3 (19 KOs), has turned down an eliminator against Tim Bradley that would have determined who became the mandatory for the IBF welterweight title, currently held by Kell Brook. Khan, 28, had previously reached out to Boxing Scene to categorically refute the claims. However, the IBF Championships Chairman confirmed that Khan had indeed been offered the fight with Bradley and that it had been rejected on his behalf by his team. "Amir Khan’s people turned down the fight. Bradley accepted"...

Amir Khan And Other Boxers Accused Of Having A Weak Chin

Amir Khan: my chin ain't weak

It’s called the dreaded “weak chin” “glass chin” and “glass jaw” said in reference to boxers, who get knocked out more easily than others. Former welterweight champion, Amir Khan, recently fired back at widespread claims online that he has a “weak chin.” Khan suffered a few defeats that saw him knocked down in the ring.

Amir Khan

Boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao recently did an interview to talk about his training regimen. When asked the worst place to be hit, PacMan stated “the chin.” I was speaking to my dad over the phone recently about this. My dad, a former athlete, football and cricket coach, says it’s due to the fact a punch to the chin causes “dislocation” that “goes straight to the brain.

Manny Pacquiao

The fact of the matter is anyone can get knocked out. My dad stated that’s why boxers exercise the trapezius muscle, with the hope it will aid in withstanding a potential knock out. There are other strategies in the ring that aid in evading a knock out. My dad stated developing “defensive skills to protect oneself in situations” as well as offensive skills in being able to adeptly “maneuver your opponent into a situation and deal with him.”

Timothy Bradley vs Manny Pacquiao in their highly anticipated rematch PacMan won

Athletes must love their sport, be well-rounded and learn their trade if they are to succeed in their chosen profession. Some boxers are big power punchers, but that’s their main game. However, as stated above, it is better to be well-rounded, learning and developing all the skills to make one's game total and complete. My dad’s favorite boxer is Muhammad Ali, a man he met (click here for that humorous story).

Muhammad Ali

My dad highly rates Ali as a power puncher, but also as a boxer who could skillfully move around the ring and duck punches with great defensive skills. As my dad says, a boxer “can’t be flatfooted” as they always “have to be on their toes” with “legs that are in good shape.” Ali is a prime example of these skills.

Sugar Ray Robinson

Floyd Mayweather also has great defensive skills. During his fight with formidable challenger, Marcos Maidana, "Chino" put in work repeatedly throwing flurries of punches at Mayweather, but many of them did not land, due to Mayweather’s superb defensive skills. When Mayweather went on the offensive, he landed more punches with selective, well timed shots.

Floyd Mayweather

My dad also stated boxers should beware of "forming bad habits." Boxing is such a risky endeavor, where some have sustained serious injuries during practice and in the ring. One's boxing form and training regimen must be as textbook as possible in adhering to established, winning principles and techniques used by legendary pugilists.

Marcos Maidana

Boxers who are just beginning their professional careers should seek to gradualize their ascent and career trajectory, selectively choosing the appropriate opponents that match their level of experience. The more you box, the more experience you will gain. There is raw talent out there, who have the ability to take on the best pros in the world, but it should follow a process to ensure they are not outfoxed in the ring by someone who has more experience and has already learned all the tricks of the trade.

A Boxer’s Worst Nightmare - Your Mama Getting In The Ring With You During Your Fight (Video)

There’s been a running joke for years regarding the fight between boxers Tony Wilson and Steve McCarthy. Wilson's mom, angry he was being hit by McCarthy climbed into the ring and began beating her son's rival and the whole thing was caught on camera (haha, how embarrassing). This created a third round stoppage.

If I had a son and he were a boxer, I'd be happy for him, but at the same time I would not enjoy watching him getting hit in the ring and probably would want to take out a hit on anyone hitting him (furthermore, I'm pretty, so my son would be pretty too and I wouldn't want his face getting jacked up - kidding). So, I can understand what happened in the Wilson v. McCarthy fight, but she shouldn't have gotten in the ring with her son (LOL).

Manny "PacMan" Pacquiao's mom Dionesia Pacquiao AKA "PacMom" is the truth. You go girl!

Then there’s Mama Pacquiao, who was falsely accused last month of doing voodoo during the rematch between her son Manny Pacquiao and rival Timothy Bradley, as she was seen fervently praying ringside with a cross and prayer card in her hands (then something mysteriously happened to Bradley's calf, Manny punched him up and he lost the fight (LOL). Now that's what I call team work.

This is where Manny gets it from (LOL)

With the results Manny got, Mama Pacquiao owned that fight. If I were a boxer I’d call up Manny and say, “Bro, I have a fight coming up, can I borrow your mom?” Mama Pacquiao could do the ring walk with me if she wanted to...she could even sing the ring walk music if she felt like it. If Mama Pacquiao wanted me to dump my cornerman (cutman) so she could be my cornerwoman - done! Because I know with her in my corner I’d win the fight and everyone could kiss my butt belt if they don’t like it.

Manny Pacquioa’s Trainer Freddie Roach Slams Floyd Mayweather Accusing Him Of Running From A Fight (Video)

Freddie Roach, the successful trainer of well-liked boxer, Manny Pacquiao, has slammed his client’s fellow champion, undefeated superstar, Floyd Mayweather, stating he keeps providing excuses in attempts at running from a fight with the new WBO titleholder. Yes, Roach went there! Oh, this is getting good!

Roach insists Pacquiao is and has been ready to fight Mayweather anytime, any place. He states it is now up to Mayweather to commit. Roach stated he feels public demand for the match up has somewhat waned over the past two years. However, Pacquiao defeating worthy rival, Timothy Bradley, has greatly renewed interest.

Timothy Bradley and Manny Pacquiao

Roach stated to the Telegraph newspaper, "We'd love to fight [Floyd] Mayweather but there have been so many excuses. He really doesn't seem to want to fight us, but we want that fight. I think my guy beats him...It was not the best I have seen Manny perform, but I'm not annoyed with him, I'm annoyed at myself for not seeing Bradley's plan coming..."I've stopped getting angry about Mayweather refusing to fight my guy, but we've agreed to everything - a 60/40 split of the purse, blood testing, whatever it is... and then he comes up with something else."

Manny Pacquiao

Roach further stated, "The problem he has is history will judge this. The thing is he is the one who won't fight us. Manny is going to go down in history as a great fighter, the greatest fighter of his era. Mayweather is going to go down as a great fighter, but the guy who never fought Manny Pacquiao."

Floyd Mayweather

Mayweather has been silent on Paquiao’s unanimous victory in the Bradley fight this past weekend, though many have sought his opinion on the bout. He is also withholding comment on Roach’s recent statements, accusing him of ducking a fight with Pacquiao. However, Mayweather is not one to bite his tongue for long.

Timothy Bradley (left) Dionesia Pacquiao (center) Manny Pacquiao (right)

Side Bar: People joked on Twitter that Manny Pacquiao’s mom, who was in the audience during his fight, put a hex on Timothy Bradley, cause he lost the fight and injured his calf. Y'all are wrong for that on Twitter (LOL). Last week I stated on Twitter that she was fervently praying for her son, with a prayer card and cross (rosary) around her hand. She confirmed it yesterday. I said a prayer for Manny last week too before the fight.

Freddie Roach: 'so many excuses' coming from Floyd Mayweather to avoid facing Manny Pacquiao

7:02AM BST 14 Apr 2014 - Manny Pacquiao's Hall of fame trainer Freddie Roach has accused Floyd Mayweather Jnr of "making excuses not to fight" the Flipino Congressman but that his charge is "ready anytime" to face the American. On Saturday night here in Sin City Pacquiao was clinical in earning a unanimous decision in his rematch with Timothy Bradley, avenging his controversial 2012 loss in their first meeting, to claim the WBO welterweight crown...

Mommy Dionesia says no hex on Bradley, only a sorry

Sunday, 13 April 2014 22:53 - MANILA, Philippines — Dionesia Pacquiao, mother of champion Manny Pacquiao, clarified online trends and speculations that she was casting a spell on his son's opponent, Timothy Bradley, during their match in Las Vegas on Sunday.

"Rosary lang. Habang nagbakbakan sila, nagpe-pray ako para sa kanya. Sabi ko sa Panginoon na, sana pabagsakin niya si Bradley," Dionesia said in an interview with dzBB on Monday. News outfits said Dionesia, wearing a white gown, stole the show during the much-anticipated rematch.

She was spotted pointing fingers seemingly at Bradley, glaring menacingly, kissing a prayer card while reading aloud while the two fighters traded blows. Dionesia, a fervent Catholic, said her prayers seemed to have worked after she saw her son gaining ground as Bradley was losing his footing. "Nakita ko na, four rounds na ... ang paa ni Bradley, 'pag papunta kay Manny, gano'n gano'n na e. Sabi ko, praise the Lord!" she said...

Dionesia was afterwards seen on camera approaching Bradley and speaking with him. "Sinabihan ko siya na, 'I'm sorry, Bradley ... sports, boxing lang ha'," she recalled. "Tumatawa si Bradley sa akin. Humarap siya sa'kin, tawa ng tawa. Sabi niya, 'No problem, mama, I need more time'," Dionesia added...

Fight Week Conditioning with Manny Pacquiao

When boxing star Manny Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 KO) steps back into the ring this weekend against Timothy Bradley, he’ll be faster and more explosive than he has been in years, thanks in large part to the return of strength and conditioning coach Justin Fortune, whose old school, power-and-speed based approach helped Pacquiao gain a reputation as a knockout artist on his rise to superstardom...

MANNY’S POWER WORKOUT

Pacquiao’s strength and conditioning routine is different most days of the week but many of the elements he tackles most often are contained in this full-body thrash devised by Fortune.

Exercise Sets/Reps (or Time)
Plyo Push-Up Circuit 3/101
Plyometric Cone Drill 1/3 min.
Battle Ropes 4/3 min.
Jump Rope 1/10 min.

Manny rarely exceeds one minute of rest between any sets or exercises to simulate fight night recovery demands.

1 Manny shoots for three sets of 10 reps on each of the four exercises (see below) but terminates a set the instant he feels like he is slowing down. “It’s all about speed,” Fortune says. “You want your hands touching the floor or the platforms for as little time as possible.”

2 Fortune sets up five cones in a cross, or an X, with one of the cones at the center. Each cone is spaced 1-2 feet apart. Starting in the center cone with his feet together, Pacquiao hops quickly to the forward cone and back to the center. Landing softly, he quickly switches direction to a cone at his side or behind him. He works on a variety of patterns for three straight minutes.

3 For his work on the battle ropes, Pacquaio performs several variations – hands together, hands apart, long waves, short waves and side-to-side – for three, one-minute rounds.

Plyo Push-up Circuit

Variation 1: Manny starts with his hands spaced narrowly on the floor, just inside of two stable platforms, each 4-10” high, depending on the day. From there, he explodes up and lands softly with his hands on top of the platforms. He pauses only briefly before lowering himself into another push-up, exploding at the top and returning his hands to the floor between the platforms. Each time up and each time down count as reps, so his aim is five up and five down for one set.

Variation 2: Starting in push-up position with his left hand on the platform and right hand on the floor, Manny descends into a push-up and powers his way laterally over to his right so that his left hand is now on the floor and his right hand is on the right platform. Pacquiao pauses only briefly before descending into a push-up and reversing direction explosively to his left. Each lateral bound is one rep.

Variation 3: Starting with his hands on the floor between two platforms, Manny “walks” his hands up to the top of both platforms, putting one hand up, then the other. Each time he returns to the floor counts as one rep.

Variation 4: Performing the standard plyometric push-up with a shoulder-width hand spacing, Manny aims to get as much air as possible on each rep...

Sensational Manny Pacquiao Wins Rematch Against Dynamic Timothy Bradley And Is Now Looking To Fight Floyd Mayweather

Timothy Bradley and Manny Pacquiao

Filipino boxing sensation, Manny Pacquiao, won his highly anticipated rematch against previously undefeated champion, Timothy Bradley. Pacquiao went into the fight confident and determined to right the wrong that occurred in his last bout with Bradley, which was controversial due to scoring.

Many are of the belief Pacquiao won the initial fight. Bradley was not, believing he won the first fight. However, Bradley conceded with dignity showing great class in his kind words about Pacquiao. Bradley’s impressive record now stands at 31-1. Pacquiao won the WBO welterweight title via a unanimous decision. Reports state Pacquiao was guaranteed $20,000,000 for the fight.

It is now being stated Pacquiao is looking to negotiations in attempts at securing a fight with fellow champion Floyd Mayweather, who has announced he will retire next year. As stated previously in the column, a match between Mayweather and Pacquiao would be the most anticipated fight in boxing history.

Manny Pacquiao Not Aiming To Knock Out Rival Timothy Bradley In Upcoming Boxing Match

Timothy Bradley and Manny Pacquiao

In an interview released this month, powerhouse boxer, Manny Pacquiao revealed he does not plan on knocking out rival, Timothy Bradley, in their April 12, 2014 rematch in Las Vegas. Bradley was awarded the fight after their last bout in a very controversial decision. Bradley had been taunting Pacquiao telling him he’s lost his edge and will lose again. Pacquiao reminded him that humility is best. He intends to let his fists do the talking during the match.

Pacquiao stated, “We’re not focusing on a knockout. Our focus this time time is to put more aggressiveness and throw a lot of punches and if the knockout comes it comes. I just want to prove that I still have the hunger and the killer instinct.” After what Bradley's been saying about you Pac-Man, he's begging to get knocked out (joking).
