R&B Group TLC Slammed On Twitter For Collecting $430,000 In Donations For An Album That Has Not Materialized

Atlanta R&B duo, TLC, was slammed and mocked on the social networking website Twitter this past Sunday, for soliciting donations for an album that has not materialized. In January of this year, TLC promised an album by October 2015, which as you can tell, was last month. A fan asked TLC member T-Boz about his money ($5) and the album and she told him to call Kickstarter and get his money back (LOL).

The group used Kickstarter to collect $430,000, which is a significant amount of money to raise on said site. It set a record for raising the sum in two days. However, nearly one year has past and the album has not been released. There are indications the CD has not even been made yet, as there has been no real news on the songs being recorded. For $430,000 rapper Chief Keef could make 430,000 albums (I’m kidding). Not to mention, Chief Keef‘s music videos don’t cost more than 99 cents each to make, but he became a millionaire anyway (LOL).

After yesterday’s problems, TLC announced an album will be released next year. TLC’s last album, 2002’s “3D” did not fare well on the charts or in sales. Since the 2002 death of former group member, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, who died in a car accident, their sales have plummeted. The public has not gotten used to the idea of TLC being a duo, after achieving multi-platinum success as a trio.

Times have also changed since TLC’s last successful CD, 1999’s “Fan Mail.” Due to advances in technology, it’s easy to make an album now for $430,000 (you could make more than one for that figure). However, the caliber of producers TLC are used to working with will still charge $250,000 to $500,000 per song. The average album contains at least 10 songs, so this poses a slight problem. TLC will have to find new producers, who charge far less…or give the project to one of their former producers, such as Jermaine Dupri, who is broke and bankrupt and might do the whole project for $200,000. However, Dupri hasn’t had a hit in a long time and was sued several times for copyright infringement.

During TLC’s hay day, the music industry was booming in the sales department. TLC’s top album “CrazySexyCool” sold over 10,000,000 copies in America and 20,000,000 worldwide. That does not happen anymore. The American public has turned off the music industry in the United States. The music industry in America is now a shell of its former self in terms of business and creativity. Albums that go number one in America now often sell 50,000 copies in their debut week, when CDs used to sell 500,000 to 1,000,000 in that same time frame a decade prior.

Another noted change is the quality of music has greatly declined. Many artists that have been signed to deals do not have talent. They were signed for looks and nothing else. Another issue is many artists, songwriters and producers are stealing music and the public in turn are refraining from buying, opting to download songs for free on illegal sites. Hey, you lead by example.

New independent artists are making albums for $5,000 (in some cases less) but they do all the work themselves or in tandem with hungry new producers, who are willing to accept less money up front with the hope of receiving greater royalties constituting the real money if the project is a success.

Side Bar: As Twitter slammed and made fun of TLC yesterday, I went to the ladies pages to see their reaction. There was not much of one on T-Boz’s page (Tionne Watkins). However, I discovered yesterday that Chilli (Rozanda Thomas) has blocked me (I couldn't stop laughing). However, I had never asked her a question on Twitter or followed her account. My only encounter with any member of TLC was in a Miami mall when T-Boz and then boyfriend Dalvin of Jodeci stared me in the face like they knew me.

It is strange (Chilli) to block someone who is not contacting you and I haven't contacted them in any way. The whole thing stems from me trying to uplift TLC’s former manager, Pebbles (Perri Reid), who is now a Christian minister that was savaged in their biopic and online. I also tweeted at Pebbles on Twitter to clear up a false story online by a man claiming to be her secret son, which I did not believe to be true, as she is a woman who proudly shows off her kids to the public. Pebbles responded and cleared up the story. Chilli has me off for that as she still has animosity towards Pebbles.

Chilli also has me off for writing about her affair with Pebbles’ ex-husband, former LaFace Records co-owner, L.A. Reid (I met Reid's cousin in Atlanta years ago through a good friend and she told me some things, nothing that betrayed him, just the facts that were a bit sad and it had to do with his cheating during his marriage to Pebbles). I didn’t agree with what Chilli did in that she edged out former TLC member Crystal Lewis by having sex with L.A. Reid, behind Pebbles’ back, which got her placed in the group, in what was a betrayal of the woman who made her famous (Pebbles). That must have been very hurtful.

I know they all had their disputes with each other, but Pebbles was blamed for everything, when Clive Davis is the one who received the lion’s share of the money (the group figured it out later and held him at gunpoint in his New York office demanding their money). Now the deal Pebbles gave TLC is common in the American music industry, yet she was vilified for it by the group. Here’s hoping one day they will all make peace with each other. Life is too short for all the strife.

For the past few years, a man has been submitting stories to blogs claiming he is the secret son of R&B legends Pebbles (born Perri McKissack) and El Debarge. He even took Pebbles' last name calling himself "Sebastian McKissack." He took his mentally unstable, stalker behavior to new heights recently, stating he is going to publish a tell-all book on the subject next month.

Being a Pebbles fan since I was a kid, I found the rumors unsettling and did not (and do not) believe them. I did not like the reaction the lies were provoking from the public on feedback sections of various blogs, who were being duped. I even did an article about it several months ago.

Last week, I tweeted to Pebbles about it on Twitter, stating I do not believe the rumors and the same was said about Janet Jackson having a secret son with a Debarge (James). However, it turned out it was Janet's niece someone mistook for her daughter, as the Jacksons have very similar features and have a very distinct look with the high cheek bones and doe eyed (big, brown eyes).

Pebbles responded to the tweet stating she does not have a secret son and does not know El Debarge, though she is a fan of his music (as am I). I hope this puts this matter to rest for the public. The public should not buy the forthcoming book, as it is not based in truth. No need to read a pack of lies. Sometimes people latch on to pretty female singers and actresses, making outlandish, untrue claims. Pebbles is beautiful and El Debarge is almost as pretty as Pebbles (El, you know you're pretty, embrace it bro LOL).

Either "Sebastian" was lied to by someone in his actual family, as has happened in other cases or he developed the scientifically recognized psychiatric disorder Erotomania, where one believes one is related to, married to or has a special connection to a celebrity, when in reality no such relation, relationship or bond exists.

Many wrongly assume former video girl Tracey Edmonds, was producer Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds' first wife. However, Babyface's first wife is a woman named Denise Edmonds. Reid and his then wife, singer and manager, Pebbles.

However, their marriage came crashing down one day when Babyface met then realtor, Tracey Edmonds in Los Angeles. According to a Johnson publication at the time, Edmonds was opening her real estate office and had spent the day cleaning it up with her mother. They spotted Babyface and followed his car for blocks. Tracey went up to wealthy Babyface and introduced herself, determined to land the married producer... and she did.

Babyface afforded her the money is no object lifestyle she craved, even if it meant breaking his wife's heart via a hasty divorce. She then used his connections to set up a music management and record company, Yab Yum, which only had one moderately successful act, Jon B. Her next venture was exploiting Babyface's ties in Hollywood to start a film production company. College educated Tracey could have used her education to get ahead, but chose to use her body via breaking up a marriage of one of the industry's wealthiest producers.

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Babyface tellingly stated, "The reality is that there was a connection that wasn’t really there. We loved each other but we weren’t really in love with each other. It was more the idea of it falling apart and me holding onto the image of what I thought we were...I don’t feel like we were supposed to be together forever. I’m okay with it because I think she’s okay."

This week, two of TLC's top fansites bitterly complained on the social networking website Twitter that the female duo had been dropped from Epic/Sony records because of their former manager, Pebbles, being angry with the portrayal of her in the movie "CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story" (Pebbles Being Blamed For TLC Being Dropped From Sony Music's Epic Records But The Truth Is...).

Television network VH-1 issued a retraction to Pebbles on the former "true story" rebranding it a "fictionalized" account of events that transpired and no "reasonable person" should take it literally. However, some fans of TLC have been directing a lot of hate and animosity towards Pebbles on Twitter.

However, when TLC were removed from the Epic/Sony recently, the webmasters of a couple TLC fansites, drew the public's attention to it and blamed Pebbles as the reason behind it. However, as a pr rep pointed out to me and others on Twitter, L.A. Reid has since issued a tweet stating, "sorry folks- @OfficialTLC have not been dropped by @Epic_Records and yes we @officialchilli and @tbozworld are friends 4 life!"

 

Either the fansites were misinformed or the usage of the words "sorry folks" in L.A. Reid's statement indicates they were dropped but have been reinstated. Either way, as the Judiciary Report pointed out yesterday, TLC's sales new are too low (50,000 units in one month) as artists selling five times as many units have been dropped.

The whole dynamic of the group changed when Lisa Lopes died a decade ago in a tragic car accident. Things haven't been the same since, then the group went on an extended hiatus. Many younger audiences do not know who TLC are, though the biopic did grant them new exposure.

TLC’s Former Manager Pebbles Really Needs To Write A Book Due To Scandalous Claims Online

For the past several years, there have been scandalous rumors online about TLC’s former manager and mentor Pebbles, real name Perri McKissack. After Pebbles had a legal dispute of a contractual nature with the all female music group she made very famous, some took to the internet to post items about her that are incendiary.

For instance, several blogs have reported a claim that she was a prostitute in her native Oakland, California, where she dated a drug dealer who pimped her. There are also claims that at age 20, Pebbles married George Smith - a man twice her age who was the head of a California bank - after cheating with him as his wife lay dying of cancer. The report also states Pebbles moved into his large home and began wearing his dead wife’s clothes (furs ect) the day of the funeral. The next claim states she cheated on Smith with producer L.A. Reid, whom she married.

There are claims that during the marriage to Reid, who constantly cheated on her (which is true) she picked up with an old lover Joe Broadnax, an alleged drug dealer from Oakland, whom she became pregnant for, bearing him a secret son named Tian. A post on YouTube featured Tian claiming Pebbles never owned up to him and he is living in rough circumstances in Oakland. The video was subsequently deleted. Then there’s the long list of rumors about what transpired with TLC, which needs to be addressed.

TLC, L.A. Reid and Pebbles. A reliable source responsible for some of my exclusives has again confirmed to me that Chilli had an affair with Pebbles' then husband L.A. Reid. The source stated "Chilli is lying" regarding denials about the affair. 

It's great that Pebbles has now become a minister and has been devoting time to help people, which is a good thing. Pebbles has led a very interesting life, filled with accomplishments and heartbreak. A book by her would be an interesting read. I would definitely buy that book.

What TLC looked like watching Pebbles' interviews this week

T-Boz and Chilli of the girl group TLC blew a gasket yesterday when their former manager and mentor, Pebbles, who is now a minister, when on two shows and let the cat out of the bag regarding many things that happened behind the scenes with the group, refuting what was stated in the VH-1 biopic "CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story."

Chilli still rocking the baby hairs in 2013. Girl, you need to push that thing back like Lebron. LOL I'm just playing, Lebron, don't get mad, but lend her one of your headbands.

Both T-Boz and Chilli tweeted on social networking site Twitter "Yall need 2 watch what church y'all walk into cuz I'll tell ya some of these so-called MINISTERS might get struck by lightning at any moment." The statement was disrespectful to the church. I can't vouch for anyone, but I have seen some of the good work Pebbles has been doing in ministry.

Chilli is also claiming she never had sex with L.A. Reid, but she is not telling the truth, much like in the film "CrazySexyCool." This story has been going around for nearly 15-years on radio in Atlanta and in the blogosphere. Chilli had ample time to address it. She could have even sued. However, she has not. If fact, the video "Have A Little Mercy" by another of Pebbles' groups 4.0, in the industry was said to be about issues with L.A. Reid's infidelity:

Chilli is known in the industry for being promiscuous, T-Boz was not. It's the same promiscuity that caused a number of famous men to have cold feet regarding marrying her. Chilli is a pretty woman, but her wildness and pickiness, combined with the sheer devotion she has demanded from men and not returned burned her. Focusing on other women's men didn't help either.

It seems the new TLC television biopic should have been titled "Slam Pebbles" rather than "CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story" as that's all the music group seems to be doing. The surviving members of TLC, Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and Rozhanda "Chilli" Thomas (Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes died in a car crash) have been doing promo rounds for the movie and all they keep focusing on is trashing their former manager, Pebbles, who created the group. One would think that's all the movie is about.

TLC famously had a financial dispute with Pebbles, real name Perri Reid, after she held auditions in Atlanta, Georgia for talent and put the three aforementioned women together. Pebbles named the group and invested her time and money in them after signing the women to her production company Pebbitone. They received a standard recording contract after signing with Pebbitone, who secured the deal with subsidiary label LaFace Records, owned by Pebbles' then husband L.A. Reid and his partner, producer Babyface.

After the group sold millions of CDs, they only made $15,000 each. Pebbles should have done what she had originally stated she set out to do, in directly taking the group to MCA, a label she was signed to as a recording artist. Signing with LaFace, who had a subsidiary deal with Arista, meant another company taking a cut of the profits. Other Laface artists, such as Toni Braxton and Outkast experienced money problems as well. In a subsidiary deal, the intermediary label has to take less money or the artists will financially suffer to some degree.

In TLC's case it was made significantly worse as they had all these expensive music videos (after they left Pebbles), especially "Waterfalls" which cost $2,000,000 (TLC was not Chief Keef, shooting $5 music videos in their living room and that's why he became rich so fast, low overhead). Recording and music video costs come right off the top of revenue generated, before an artist even sees a dime. TLC also had many top notch songwriters/producers charging $50,000 to $200,000 per song. Their projects were not cheap.

TLC in the 1990s

At the time TLC were very young and new to the business. They did not understand how the music industry operates. However, Pebbles stated she was the scapegoat and fall guy for their money woes and in many ways she was, as LaFace and Arista could have done more to grant the group a better compensation package from the start.

However, TLC was quite young and hungry and offered the chance of a lifetime at stardom and they took. What I don't like is the arrogance coming from TLC, especially towards Pebbles, who is now a preacher trying to help others. They are allowed to tell their story, it's free speech, but why be so nasty about it when they previously stated things were resolved.

They pretended to be friends with her as though their problems were in the past, but to promote a movie they are paid for, they are drumming up anger, animosity and controversy for ratings, when they were smiling with her last year and the year before. There is some hypocrisy running in the background from TLC.

Not to mention, had it not been for Pebbles, no one would know who they are. They are not Whitney Houston or Barbara Streisand caliber singers, who would have most likely made it no matter what. They are two girls with nice voices. Let's keep it real. Had it not been for Pebbles and LaFace's clout and connections, the trio (who wouldn't have met) would have easily flopped on most labels.

TLC received the benefit of the top songwriters and producers of the time from their very first CD, which is not the norm in the music industry. They had big budgets/advances from the start, which is also not the norm in the music business. Just stating the facts.

Unless you are a new artist who starts working with or are a newbie producer, who turns out to be the next Babyface, David Foster or Devante Swing, you will be placed with lesser known or new folks to stay on budget, who most likely will not have the best musical skills in the business.

They had a significant amount of help. TLC needs to acknowledge this fact and stop trying to paint a different picture, that it was destiny and solely about them. Their music was explicit and vulgar. Their videos debauched and crude. That wasn't a divine plan as they have implied in interviews. Once again, just stating the facts.

It's amazing what people will attribute to God. Really, I know God didn't tell you to go out there and sing "Take a good look at it, look at it now. It maybe the last time you have a go round. I'll let you touch it if you like to go d*wn. Baby it's yours, if you want it tonight. I'll give you the red light special all through the night."

The whole internet knew what TLC meant. They were singing about sex. That should be stuff done behind closed doors - no need to sing it at us in such terms. Not to mention TLC lyrics like "B***h like me." So, stop with the it-was-divine-destiny. It was an opportunity at fame and fortune and that is all.

Additionally, what were the members of the band doing before that - Watkins was shampooing hair (and there's nothing wrong with that), Chilli was a back-up dancer (which is fine too) and Lopes was homeless (which was sad and tragic and I would never make fun of that). I'm just trying to bring home my point, be humble, as TLC was a group created and funded by others to the tune of millions, which gave three unknown girls a big opportunity. Let's not lose sight of that. Sadly, along the way, there were financial issues.

The music industry is a business (just like a bank, store, investment or insurance company). Production companies and labels invest millions in artists. It is not an entitlement. It's not a right. They don't owe anyone the opportunity or privilege. It is a loan made against future sales that must be repaid. It is in every recording contract known to man.

As a general rule, don't sign a contract if you don't understand it. Don't get involved in a business you have no understanding of, as trouble can erupt from it. In closing, it is regrettable things became so acrimonious, volatile and ugly in the TLC case.

Side Bar: for years there was a story online about Chilli sleeping with Pebbles' husband L.A. Reid during their marriage, as revealed on an Atlanta radio show. Why is no one making reference to that. It needs to be addressed.

The TV Movie 'CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story' Could Be The Subject Of A Defamation Lawsuit (Video)

VH-1 is gearing up for the release of the TLC biopic next Monday entitled "CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story." Next week they could also be hit with a defamation lawsuit from the group's creator, singer Pebbles. In the 1990s, Pebbles held auditions and brought together the three women that would become TLC (Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and Rozhanda "Chilli" Thomas).

Pebbles named the group, invested her time and money in the trio, secured them the top R&B and hip hop producers of the time and a recording contract with her husband's label LaFace Records, distributed by Arista Records, now apart of Sony Music.

TLC in the 1990s

The group released their first CD "Oooh On The TLC Tip" and became famous. Then things got ugly. Really ugly. TLC and Pebbles had a high profile legal dispute over royalties, their name and management/production contract with her company Pebbitone. The group members complained they were broke and filed for bankruptcy.

They cited their production/management deal with Pebbles and the unfavorable recording contract they held with LaFace Records. The parties settled out of court for an undisclosed sum. Pebbles released TLC from their contract under the settlement and the group resigned with LaFace for a reported $20,000,000 advance. Pebbles left the entertainment industry and became a preacher, who released a hit spiritual CD that made it into the Billboard Gospel Top 20 chart.

After Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes died in a car accident in 2002, the surviving members of TLC, Rozanda "Chilli" Thomas and Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins appeared to bury the hatchet with Pebbles, as up to a couple years ago they've been seen together in public. Chilli was even photographed hugging Pebbles during a talent show they did for Essence magazine.

However, yesterday TLC did a harsh interview regarding Pebbles with Power 105.1's The Breakfast Club, a show known for being controversial. During the interview they bashed Pebbles, who responded on Twitter stating the film is full of lies and embellishments and the interview was hurtful.

 

TV biopic "CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story" 

Pebbles is consulting with her lawyers and will have them watch the film to determine if there exists litigable offenses. Judging by the pre-release materials for the biopic, they portrayed Pebbles in a very negative light, to the point the radio disc jockey, DJ Envy, stated he hates her and she is like the devil, which was mean.

One has to wonder if it is all for ratings, because as stated above, TLC have been seen in Pebbles' company fairly recently laughing, smiling and hugging her as though they are on good terms. How did things between the two parties revert to the acrimony of their past dispute overnight.

Looking at the promo clips for the project, the tone of the movie comes across as somewhat cheesy, due to the actresses not being able to turn in polished performances in the recreation of the group's music videos and photos. The body language is all wrong as well, very exaggerated and at points creating unintentional laughs.

The casting is also poor to the point it is a bit comedic. Many online complained Lil Mama should not have been given the role of Left Eye. The only one they got right was Drew Sidora as T-Boz. The rest of the casting is a miss. Bad casting will hurt any project. There are talented actors and actresses in the film, but they are not right for the roles they were assigned and it shows.

Chilli stated during the radio interview posted above that she believes "CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story" will be a classic flick like VH-1's retelling of the Jacksons and Temptations' stories. Not even. The trailer for "CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story" reveals it is too cheesy to become a classic.

"What Chilli Wants"

Viacom's VH-1 has signed former TLC singer, Rozanda "Chilli" Thomas, to a reality show that is set to premiere shortly. The program is titled "What Chilli Wants" and is about her search for a soul mate. However, as anyone who knows anything about Atlanta music circles can tell you, Chilli's had more than her fair share of men.

Men such as Island/Def Jam CEO, Antonio "L.A." Reid, who was the husband of Chilli's manager, Perri "Pebbles" Reid. Years ago, there was a tense radio showpiece about the subject.

L.A. Reid brought Chilli to then wife, Pebbles, when she was forming the R&B group TLC. He was sleeping with then back-up dancer, Chilli, whilst cheating on his wife.

She later dated R&B singer Usher and the two went public with their relationship. However, it was crashed by stylist, Tameka Foster, who left her husband to be with the music star.

Not long after, Chilli was tied to CNN news anchor, TJ Holmes, and football players Ray Lewis and Larry Johnson. Lately, she has often been seen in the company of boxer, Floyd Mayweather.

It's going to be somewhat difficult to sell the world on the idea one is searching for one's soulmate, when many thought one had found him before…several times.

But as her record deal has expired, TLC faded away and acting prospects have dried up, Thomas certainly sees this as the next avenue in her career.

This is a follow up to the article Inappropriate Photo Of Aaron Reid. Blogger Nik of "The Dirty" website has gotten into a war of words with Island/Def Jam CEO, L.A. Reid, for reposting an inappropriate photo of his 19-year-old son, Aaron, with his genitals exposed.

The photo was reportedly taken by a woman in a hotel room, when his son fell asleep. She sent it to the Worldstar Hip Hop site with a unkind story and they published both items, violating his privacy.

"The Dirty" website could have taken the photo down, as could the other two dozen websites running it, according to Google Blog search. However, from a legal standpoint, yes, "The Dirty" can be sued, but apparently the original source of the malfeasance is Worldstar Hip Hop.

"The Dirty" may have received an email from the anonymous woman as well, but the site was not the first to be sent the item. Worldstar Hip Hop is in possession of the original email, with the IP address and information that can be obtained via court order, if the site decides to shield the cowardly, cruel acts of the anonymous woman.

While we are on the subject of L.A. Reid, I do not agree with him for letting his son hang around the likes of Jay-Z and other hardcore rappers and lascivious singers, from a very early age. They are a destructive force and exposed him to things he did not need to be around.

He is now aspiring to join his dad in the music industry, one of Hollywood's worst components, that is corrupting people's children everyday. His mother, Perri Reid, formerly the singer Pebbles, who is now a minister, was on TBN a couple years ago, speaking about her concern for him in this regard.

Aaron Reid's first projects are a group called Overdoz (overdose), which I think is a terrible, suggestive name for a band and his second project is a show he is referring to as the black "Entourage" - alluding to the HBO r-rated show of the same name.

"Entourage" is a bad influence, as it glorifies the promiscuous sex, drugs and rock and roll aspect of Hollywood. There is nothing cool about that show. Experimenting with drugs and being promiscuous will damage anyone.

Simply put, Hollywood is not a good place. Do not let anyone deceive you into thinking otherwise. It turns child stars into dysfunctional drug addicts with severe emotional problems only God can fix.

If you are a gifted teen, watch out, they will exploit you for your talents as well. There is another well-documented incident, regarding when I was a minor of 15-years-old, where Sony targeted and exploited me, in conjunction with another label, as I was a child prodigy. Their behavior in said incident, which I will go into shortly, was nothing short of greedy and depraved.

Any kind of industry that can target, exploit and savage kids, is one of barbarians and savages that you need to protect yourself and your children from. Hollywood is the destroyer of lives. Avoid them like the plague. It is full of crazy people, who believe in sick cults such as Scientology and Kabbalah.

They rob innocent people on a weekly basis. They pay thugs to harass, assault and murder others, who simply disagree with them in business or pose a financial, competitive threat to them. They hire PIs such as Anthony Pellicano and Gavin DeBecker, to stalk, threaten and invade the privacy of innocent people, they target for reasons known only to them, as they are insane and mad with what they perceive to be power. Bar none, the worst industry in the world, constantly contributing negativity to society.
