Celluloid Film Review: Madea's Big Happy Family

Title: Madea's Big Happy Family

Year Of Release: 2011

Review Date: September 30, 2011

Rating: PG-13

Running time: 106 minutes

Box Office Gross: $53,345,287

Site Rating: 6 out of 10 stars

"Madea's Big Happy Family" is the story of Madea's big crazy family, struggling with various problems. Loretta Devine, stars as "Shirley" a family matriarch dying from cancer and wanting her family together for a nice meal together, where she can give them the bad news, after being given weeks to live.

However, Shirley's family, comprised of her adult children, have many problems that range from martial trouble to a past secret incident of molestation, resulting in each attempt at a dinner, descending into fights. This film is sad, but brings up topics people struggle with everyday.

While the Celluloid Film Review is no fan of LionsGate, the distributor of "Madea's Big Happy Family" due to the company's unethical conduct in a number of issues, which have ventured into unlawful territory, Perry has been taking a lot of undeserved flack for his work that has been labeled buffoonery. This was a good film and contrary to what some think, there are people in the black community like some of the characters therein that have been deemed "embarrassing." Why should they be underrepresented.

It reminds me of small controversies, regarding some Jewish people not liking the sitcom "The Nanny" due to the stereotypes it contained (but the funny character had a good, kind heart and was very giving) and some Anglo-Saxons being embarrassed by "Married With Children." Well, sorry white people, I can't help you with "Married With Children" but now you know how we (black people) feel when we see "Flavor Of Love."

Flavor Flav Ripped Off KFC

KFC

Rapper and reality TV star, Flavor Flav, has ripped off KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) with his own fast food restaurant launched this month, FFC (Flavor's Fried Chicken). How unoriginal and disgraceful. No word from Kentucky Fried Chicken, regarding how they view the blatant trademark and copyright infringement.

FFC rather than KFC

Not only are the restaurants' names and logo very similar, infringing KFC's trademark, the menus are virtually the same. To add insult to injury, Flavor Flav unwisely opened it right next door to a KFC. Would it not have been more honorable and decent to have bought a KFC franchise than to have broken the law in completely ripping them off.

A portion of FFC's menu

This is very similar to the film "Coming To America" where "McDonalds" was ripped off by a restaurant named "McDowells." The rip off replicated "McDonalds" to the tee, but crazily claimed they are different because the former has "The golden arches" whereas "McDowells" has the "the golden arcs." However, it was still the exact same restaurant, just a similar new name.

Hoopz The Homewrecker

Hoopz

Reality TV star, Hoopz, from the television show, "Flavor of Love" has been named as the troublemaking adulteress in a few high profile marriages, such as those of basketball players, Dwayne Wade and Allen Iverson and the engagement of rapper T.I, to singer Tameka Cottle (Tiny).

She has been seen several times in the company of rapper TI, who is supposed to be getting married shortly. That's the thanks Cottle gets for waiting for him, while he was in prison on gun charges.

Hoopz is sadly comfortable with her role as a homewrecker. Hopefully she will change her conduct, as that is not God's will for her life. She is one of many in the entertainment industry all too glad to play that part, regardless of who gets hurt.

So many high profile marriages and relationships end in disaster and usually due to infidelity. It is often men that refuse to say no to temptation and it ends up costing them more than they bargained for, in and out of court.

MTV's "Jersey Shore" Under Fire

"Jersey Shore"

I have been dodging this story all week, but after seeing the clip posted below, I have to comment on the stereotypical cliché that is MTV's "Jersey Shore." What were they thinking.

"Jersey Shore" A/K/A "Growing Up Gotti" Part 2 (would you look at all that hair gel!)

The show centers on a young group of Italians in New Jersey, but the content is debauched, profane, promiscuous and ram packed with stereotypes that have angered some Italian-Americans and I can see why.

Jersey Shore Violence Against Women (warning: violence and inappropriate language in vid)

The show promotes what is referred to as "Guido" culture. A "Guido" is the Italian version of what Anglo-Americans call a "redneck" or "hillbilly" - what black people call "ghetto fabulous" - what British people call a "chav."

"Crank Dat Guido Boy"

"Jersey Shore" is to Italians what "Flavor of Love" is to black people - both programs should have been treated like swine flu and quarantined.

"Flavor Of Love"

Coincidentally, Viacom produces both shows. The question is why does Viacom constantly cater to the lowest common denominator, while making ethnic groups look bad on national television.
