The Spill At Dan River In North Carolina Included Cancerous Toxins Such As Arsenic In Drinking And Fishing Water (Video)

Profits Ahead Of People

CBS News program “60 Minutes” aired a segment on Duke Energy and the company’s poor coal ash removal practices currently contaminating drinking and fishing waters in select U.S. states. The most damage has been done in north Carolina, where toxic items such as arsenic have been discovered in drinking and fishing water adjacent to Duke’s plants and their coal ash ponds. The ponds were never lined which has resulted in the coal ash contaminating soil and nearby drinking water.

It is important that drinking and fishing water be kept to the highest standards of purity, as contamination with coal ash and by products such as arsenic, is cancerous. This is a prime example of corporation putting profits ahead of people. Initial government fines Duke Energy was assessed were paltry, totaling approximately $100,000. The most recent fines are approximately $100,000,000. However, it is not enough money to clean up the environmental damage that has been done.

The Spill at Dan River

2015 Jun 14 - Lesley Stahl reports on how Duke Energy is handling over 100 million tons of coal ash waste in North Carolina. The following is a script from "The Spill at Dan River" which aired on Dec. 7, 2014, and was rebroadcast on June 14, 2015. Lesley Stahl is the correspondent. Shachar Bar-On, producer.

Every year coal-burning power plants generate not only electricity but a staggering amount of leftover coal ash that contains heavy metals unhealthy to humans. Yet due in part to intense industry lobbying, oversight over disposal has been largely left in the hands of state officials and employees, who are often beholden to the powerful, local utility companies.

For decades coal ash was just dumped into giant pits dug by rivers and lakes, where toxins could leach into nearby water and soil. There are over 1,000 ash pits or ponds dotting the nation, many of them old, poorly monitored, all but forgotten. But as we first reported back in December, every few years we are reminded that this can lead to disaster like the coal-ash spill in February last year into North Carolina's Dan River at a power plant owned by Duke Energy, the biggest utility company in the country.

The spill at Dan River happened when a drainage pipe that ran underneath an ash basin and dam, collapsed, sucking out six decades of waste and spewing gunk directly into the river. Lynn Good: It was an accident. It didn't work the way it should have worked. It didn't meet our standards or our expectations. Duke Energy CEO Lynn Good, then only seven months on the job, had a crisis on her hands...

Mitt Romney Accuses President Barack Obama Of Driving Up Gas Prices To Get Americans Off Oil

Republican candidate and nomination frontrunner, Mitt Romney, is accusing President Barack Obama of fulfilling a 2008 campaign threat of driving up gas prices, to get Americans off oil, as emissions are allegedly creating global warming. Obama also invested $20 billion dollars in taxpayer money to launch solar companies that failed shortly after, losing the full amount of funds, on more of his unsuccessful energy policies.

This conduct is very unethical and financially unsound, especially during an economic crisis. Rather than turn to science for answers and innovations to reduce carbon emissions, the Obama Administration is guilty of getting carried away with its newfangled, tree hugging, moon baying philosophical beliefs on energy, at the expense of 305,000,000 people.

Barack Obama

It is inexcusable, as gas prices are helping to bankrupt Americans. And we know said energy policies failed because a.) Obama's solar pet project companies went bankrupt, adding to the national deficit and b.) nobody can afford gas - even rich people are complaining. So instead of making America billions, as the Judiciary Report suggested three years ago, the Obama administration is costing the nation billions (Obama Is Conflicted Over The Path American Energy Should Take).

I do believe, by the grace of God, there are scientific answers to these problems, but President Obama only throws taxpayer money at his big campaign donors, who aren't really scientists and have the business acumen and brainpower of Fred Flintstone. The Judiciary Report will not applaud this madness, as qualified scientists and the best and brightest of Silicon Valley should have gotten research and business start up money. Obama's campaign donors wasted billions in taxpayer money the nation will not see again.

Obama Is Conflicted Over The Path American Energy Should Take

...And It Is Costing Taxpayers A Bundle

Barack Obama

President Obama stated today that America needs to gain energy independence, but this is something he has acted against throughout his 3-years and 3-months in office. The Judiciary Report supported the Keystone Pipeline that President Obama opposed. Later on, former President and Obama's fellow Democrat, Bill Clinton, came out in support of the Keystone Pipeline.

However, this still did not convince Obama, though Clinton had the most financially successful presidency in American history, where people of different classes prospered. A few years prior, in 2008, the Judiciary Report advocated America using coal for fuel (Congress And Bureaucracy).

Once again, Obama has been against that as well. He's saying one thing and doing another. That is not going to help the U.S. economy rebound. He's lost three years that could have earned and saved the nation billions in energy sales, using the natural resources available in America.

Why Obama's Policies Are Failing

Barack Obama

Why are U.S. President Barack Obama's policies failing? Because they are not practical. They are expensive, non-priority and prideful. President Obama's obsession with solar power and clean energy has been very costly, as studies have shown, it takes more money to produce electricity and gas in this manner.

President Obama's financial initiatives also lack proper oversight. Money has been thrown all over the place in corporate America and most of it has been hoarded, rather than pumped back into the struggling economy. Regrettably, the President is not being practical or prudent.

When something does not work in political office or the corporate world, one has to possess the resilience to quickly move on to something else. However, President Obama is in denial. As a result of this refusal to accept the current state of the economy and the failures that have sprung from his presidency, the necessary adjustments are not being made to remedy the costly mistakes and wrong turns. Modern translation = brain freeze.
