Sediqque Mir Mateen stated of his son, "We were in Downtown Miami, Bayside, people were playing music. And he saw two men kissing each other in front of his wife and kid and he got very angry. They were kissing each other and touching each other and he said, 'Look at that. In front of my son they are doing that.' And they were in the men's bathroom and men were kissing each other." He has also apologized for his son's actions.

A former classmate of Mateen's stated the terrorist was gay, a claim his father denies, "If he was gay, why would he do something like this." The list of gay bars Mateen's classmate stated they visited have all stated they do not recognize him. However, some of the staff at Pulse recognized him, stating he had visited the club in the past.
