Clearing Haiti's Debris

Published reports this week indicate, one year after a devastating earthquake hit Haiti, only 5% of the debris has been cleared. This is a massive obstacle in rebuilding and prolonging Haitians stay in a makeshift tent city of 1,000,000 people.

An organizational plan needs to be put in place with one or more designated dump sites, where the debris can be stacked like a mountain, then later removed. Nations such as China and Japan, due to the size of their workforces and the fact they deal in waste management for other countries, could lend a hand in removing some of the debris as well.

Some of the relief money is said to be tied up in the U.S. Congress, which is delaying the effort. Congress needs to speed up the process, on a humanitarian basis, as people are still suffering.
