TLC Held Clive Davis At Gunpoint

TLC

Further proof that TLC's late member, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, was not of sound mind, arrived this week, courtesy of bandmate, Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins stating they unadvisedly held their label boss, Clive Davis of Arista Records, at gunpoint, due to the low royalties they received.

She stated Arista made $75 million dollars off their "Crazy, Sexy Cool" album, but only paid the three band members $50,000 each.

I agree that Arista, who had a subsidiary deal with LaFace Records and a production contract with Pebbitone, could have given them more.

Arista made more than enough money that they could have spread the wealth, buy major labels are usually greedy and crooked, refusing to do so.

TLC was later given a multi-million dollar settlement by LaFace Records. Pebbitone should have bypassed Laface and done a direct subsidiary deal with a major label, having done the work in putting TLC together in the first place. But you live and learn.

T-Boz on Monique Show: TLC's Crazy, Sexy Cool made $75 million, Arista records gave us $50,000 each

October 22, 2:11 PM - T-Boz -- real name Tionne Tenese Watkins -- one of the well-known members of the group TLC on The Mo'Nique Show, saying that when their highly successfully Crazy, Sexy, Cool album generated $75 million for Arista Records, Arista only gave the girls $50,000 a piece.

So, the late member Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes decided the group should hold Arista hostage with loaded guns till they got their money.

T-Boz said they interrupted a meeting that Sean "P Diddy" or "Puff Daddy" Combs was having at the time, because LA Reid told them that Clive Davis was the one who had their money.

Alas, T-Boz tells Mo'Nique that Arista did return some funds to them, but then recouped it somehow -- and that the whole incident became a learning lesson for the young trio.

"I wouldn't say do what we did...thank God we didn't go to jail," T-Boz advised young women today getting into the music industry. "Educate yourself. Learn about the business you're getting into."
