When Athletes Hit Their Stride

Luis Suarez, Neymar and Lionel Messi

Coaches often try to foster team spirit among athletes and it is for a reason. When athletes gel they player better as a team and overall unit. Some athletes play better than others due to various factors (some work harder, genetic factors such as height and hand/eye and hand/foot coordination, speed ect). On many occasions, when a team acquires the skills of a very gifted athlete, it has elevated the level of play among others on the squad, producing better overall results.

Arsenal's "Invincibles" squad

A recent example of this is F.C. Barcelona. They’d been doing well for a while, but this season the team led by Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez, really gelled and are playing as a unit (an annoying, irritating, upsetting goal scoring unit that just beat my team Arsenal LOL). It somewhat reminds me of Arsenal's Invincibles, who went unbeaten in the 2003-2004 Premier League season. The team was led by legendary footballer, Thierry Henry, who scored goal after goal. Henry is another example of the level of play being elevated when key athletes gel. It inspires and lifts the team.

Usain Bolt

Some athletes inspire others to do better by raising the level of competition in other ways. For the past few years, sprinters have been flying out to Jamaica with requests to train with and run against Usain Bolt, stating it helps them run faster. Bolt also elevated the level of speed among teammates such as Yohan Blake and Warren Weir.

Boxing legends Muhammad Ali and Lennox Lewis

People are also inspired by champions of the past. Boxers often find inspiration in going to historic gyms to train, soaking up the atmosphere of greatness that emanated from its walls, producing champions who are now embedded in world history. Sparring against the best in the gym is also a learning experience in itself. Whatever sport you play, resolve within yourself that you are going to fight and win.

Why Do Boxers Grow Out Their Beards During Training Camp

Does It Help Them Box Better Or Deflect Shots (LOL)

Heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury with his beard (in training camp) and with it shaved down in the ring

I've noticed a number of professional boxers grow out their beards during training camp. I jokingly thought to ask, does it help them fight better. However, I know better. It has to do with a mentality and getting in the zone. Boxers get into a mind state where grit and hardness become assets in training, in order to adapt to tough and trying conditions. It's a form of deprivation. Some boxers deprive themselves during training camp. During training they go back to the basics of life.

Ashley Theophane (left column) and Adrien Broner (right column) set to square off on April 1, 2016 in at the DC Armory in Washington, DC. Before and after training camp photos shows them without and with beards.

Former world heavyweight champ Lennox Lewis stated of training camp, "You have to sacrifice things when you are going to the top and are at the top." He further stated, "I used to go away to the Poconos Mountains to train for months. I was fortunate to have a mother come with me and make sure my meals were set in the training camp and so she sacrificed with me. This is part of the game."

50 Cent's Top Boxer James Kirkland Is Leaving His Boxing Promotions Company Leading To The Rapper Dodging His Calls

That's Not Professional 50 Cent!

50 Cent posing in front of an economy car after filing for bankruptcy

An attorney for boxer James Kirkland has made public the pugilist's desire to leave SMS boxing promotions, the company owned by rapper 50 Cent. Kirkland's attorney Mike Miller stated to the Boxing Scene website, "We're just trying to get in touch with 50's bankruptcy attorney. He won't return our phone calls to figure out what plans they have for James Kirkland. Our contract is un-assignable so he can't assign our contract to a new company or anybody else. Really I don't know what leg they have to stand on to retain our contract. I don't want to waste a hundred twenty days to find out. I'm trying to get some dialogue going to see if we can reach a mutual agreement that Kirkland goes his way and 50 goes his way and we both move on."

50 Cent, real name Curtis Jackson, recently filed for bankruptcy on two fronts. 50 Cent filed for personal bankruptcy, as well as for his fledgling company SMS. This means boxers could experience significant difficulties getting paid by SMS, if at all, as bankruptcy protection can wipe out some debts, such as what 50 Cent's company owes fighters. They could end up fighting and not getting paid the purse or not receiving money due to them for past fights.

Canelo Alvarez, 50 Cent and his boxer James Kirkland

Hanging around Floyd Mayweather, who is the richest boxer in the world, had 50 Cent thinking the boxing industry is easy with huge paydays all over the place. However, the actual reality of the sport is it requires years of hard work, patience, skill and a keen understanding of the business. It is not an easy one.

Promoters also need good instincts, not just for business, but in fight making. Not only should you be able to scout and sign great talent, you also do not put your boxer in fights they are clearly not ready for. I love boxers, God bless them, they are brave and fearless, but sometimes some pugilists will be on the "I'll fight anybody, anywhere at any time" vibe and you kindly look at them and think, "No, boo boo, you're not ready yet (LOL)." It's not an insult, it's skill matching, paired with assessing the mental and physical state of your fighter at the time.

50 Cent

A good promoter can tell such things. A novice will not be able to tell. And 50 Cent is a novice, as he put Kirkland in with boxing beast Canelo Alvarez and it damaged his career and confidence, when the latter unleashed a potent knockout. However, Kirkland and Alvarez are great fighters and it is not an insult to either. Sometimes boxers are at a bad place in their personal lives and or struggling with injury and it negatively impacts their performance in the ring. Kirkland was experiencing personal problems, changes and injury. He didn't need such a huge fight after all those problems and a layoff.

In closing, if you're a boxer and have the opportunity to sign with a big, experienced boxing promotions company such as Top Rank, Golden Boy, Mayweather Promotions, Matchroom or Frank Warren or get the chance to work with a veteran manager like Al Haymon, do so. Make sure you sign with people who know boxing or you will have problems and not reach your full potential in the ring or at the bank.

Side Bar: Why doesn't Lennox Lewis have a boxing promotions company. He was world champ, knows how to win and made a fortune as a boxer. He knows the ropes (pardon the pun).

Do Boxers Really Fight 'Bums'

Deontay Wilder

American heavyweight boxer Deontay Wilder has faced criticism over cherry picking opponents to build up his impressive 31-0 record, all by knockouts. Some have criticized him (and others) as boxers “fighting bums.” To call a boxer a “bum” is mean. That’s someone who trained hard and is bravely stepping into the ring. The funny thing is people harshly demanding rounds and tough opponents who aren’t “bums” wouldn’t last two seconds in the ring with any boxer, amateur or pro. You want those rounds, you get in the ring then (LOL).

It is undeniable Wilder can box. However, boxers shouldn’t be rushed up the ranks. Wilder has been granted a steady ascent full of wins. For any boxer, each fight should be properly matched and selected to ensure maximum benefit to one’s client. You don’t put your client in the ring too early with someone they are not ready for. Every champion boxer was once an amateur and had to start at the bottom and work their way up. Respect the process.

Lennox Lewis

A boxers ascent should be steady and smart, not accelerated. This gives the boxer time to develop as a pugilist, get all the kinks out of their game and for their respective manager to make sound, lucrative deals. Promoters should give managers a chance to properly market their boxers, setting them up with several endorsement deals, to financially set them up for life. Because all it takes is one punch from another boxer to result in a knockout and damage financial prospects. Remember, sponsors want to back winners. That’s just how it goes.

Former heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson’s first title fight was his 28th. His predecessor Muhammad Ali’s first title shot was his 20th fight. It gave them time to gain experience at a proper pace. It paid off, as they became champions and legends.

Floyd Mayweather

Even if a fairly new boxer earns $100,000 to $150,000 in one year that can’t last for the rest of their life, in the event something goes wrong with their career. Many boxers don’t have a college degree to fall back on. Therefore, promoters and managers must be smart about decisions made regarding boxers’ careers and allow room for proper financial progress and planning.

History has shown many boxers have ended up in financial straits. It is an unpredictable sport. Therefore, boxers must make the most of their opportunities while they have them, as many careers only last a few years. Not everyone becomes rich like Ali, Mayweather and Lewis.

A FEW TIPS

Learn your craft. Make sure your form and technique are textbook. It’s not an insult. You must first master the fundamentals. Correct where you’re going wrong. Be open to constructive criticism from a sensible, experienced trainer with a proven track record, as that is the only way you will reach your full potential.

Limit risks that could create injury in training, in the ring and outside the ring.

Have proper insurance.

Pay your taxes. Don't end up in jail over tax delinquencies and avoidance.

Work on your public image to make yourself more attractive to endorsers. Don’t be reckless on social networking and at public events, as it will come back to haunt you in the business world. Even people not in boxing are finding out the hard way that potential employers are searching social networking before they hire an applicant and if they see anything inappropriate on your page it will likely cost you the job (that’s money not in your pocket).

Use some of your earnings as down payment on a home (even if it is a modest one). Property ownership is a wiser choice than renting and you are in a position where you can earn enough for a down payment much more easily than the average person.

Use some of your earnings to start a small business that can provide for you and your family in the event your career hits financial difficulties in terms of lack of prize money.

Do not give anyone power of attorney over your finances. You should always be the final say on your money. There are unscrupulous people in this world who will plan and scheme regarding ways to take your money from you.

The foregoing is not a matter of being greedy or materialistic. It’s just that I’ve seen so many stars crash and burn. Therefore, I write from what I have witnessed. I’ve seen many singers, actors and athletes go broke over the years and suffer emotional and mental distress as a result, some even became suicidal (and suicide is not the answer to one’s problems) which could have been avoided with proper career and financial planning.

Your bills will not pay themselves. You have to be realistic and plan for your financial future. It’s a terrible thing to experience financial loss and instability that not only affects stars but their families as well. Be smart about your career. Find ways to sensibly earn income, don’t be wasteful and make the most of all your opportunities while they are there.

How To Reap The Benefits Of Boxing While Avoiding The Pitfalls

For Aspiring Boxers And Those On Their Way Up

Muhammad Ali

They say history is a great teacher. Those who fail to learn from it are doomed to repeat it. There is a lot of truth in those two statements. I've always found that it's better to learn from other people's mistakes and spare yourself the trouble. That's what history is there for - to learn from it and grow into better people.

Partying And Promiscuity

Adrien Broner

Athletes who party and engage in promiscuity pay a price for it in their sporting performance. You cannot live the life of a wild, partying bachelor and succeed in sport. It will catch up with you when it’s time to go to work and you are not at your best. Great managers/coaches in various sports have placed curbs via curfews and fines on their athletes, because they know the human body will not perform at its best when an athlete is out partying, getting drunk and sleeping with various women. It saps your strength, erodes fitness and destroys focus and discipline.

With so many diseases floating around like herpes and HIV, which medical science has yet to release cures for (but good work is being done behind the scenes in this regard) you are playing with your life and health going around having sex with different women. Many people with STDs/STIs don't tell potential partners and end up infecting them (while some simply do not know they are infected and unknowingly pass it on to others).

Money Team boxer, Adrien Broner, had a threesome with two women and made a sextape of it that ended up on the internet. In another incident, there were pictures on a mainstream blog of Broner performing oral sex on a stripper in clear sight of everyone at a strip club (it's a wonder he didn't get scurvy or lockjaw or need a tetanus shot - I'm kidding).

Adrien Broner

Broner, who undoubtedly has a talent for boxing, has also been engaging in partying and excessive drinking and spending his time getting into situations that are bringing him heavy public criticism he is not happy with, such as wiping his butt with money, flushing stacks of $20 bills down the toilet and the aforementioned threesome sex tape, among other things.

All of the aforementioned conduct has been a massive distraction that has taken away from his boxing. His life has become a circus with no ringmaster. Then, he stepped into the ring and lost to Marcos Maidana, in a shock defeat that shook him up. He was no longer undefeated. Broner fled the arena and cried, which was sad.

Broner is a talented boxer and I’m not trying to pick on him, but the sideshow his life has become is too much of a distraction, which is not conducive to winning in the ring. He has to get his mind right and become more settled. Too much chaos in his atmosphere, which destroys focus and waters down ambition. It breeds complacency.

Mike Tyson

Other athletes such as Mike Tyson, who is one of the greatest boxers in history, have gone on record, speaking about the wild living that sent him off track, while men like Don King robbed him left, right and center. Tyson admitted he lost focus at times, due to all the distractions that come with fame and wealth and it cost him plenty.

Your Circle

Floyd Mayweather

Beware of who you let into your circle. Not everyone is your friend. Some women have latched on to boxers deeming them a meal ticket, who will buy them luxury cars, jewelry, designer clothes and expensive purses. They also love the limelight and bragging rights that come with dating a famous man. Avoid women like that. They will bleed you dry and leave if and when the money runs out. You will end up feeling used and made a fool of.

Other folks to watch for are conmen, who try to get on your team, promising you the moon and the stars, but don't deliver. Some people will say anything to get what they want. They will become what they think you need. They will say what they think you want to hear. There are even famous people who've latched on to boxers with negative motive, only to let them down.

Avoid organized crime figures who never have good intentions towards athletes. Their plans for you will be no good. They are dangerous, violent criminals, who will wreak havoc on your life and career, all in the name of self-interest and greed. Avoid them like the plague.

Get a reputable promoter, lawyer and financial manager. Cultivate a good corporate brand. Be a role model. When entering into business deals, read and understand your contracts. If you can’t understand your contracts and have no money for a lawyer, seek the assistance of a local pro bono lawyer/legal service. Know what you are signing. If you are not comfortable, don’t sign it. Then, once you find a good team that meets your needs, stick with them.

Financial Planning

It’s always wise to save some of your money for the future. Life can be full of surprises, so it’s good to have savings to fall back on. Don’t spend all your paychecks at once. Learn to put something aside in a reliable savings account or government insured certificate of deposit. Don’t always assume money will always be coming in.

Manny Pacquiao

Try to start a little business. Choose something sensible and don't put too much of your money into it. Don't jump into business with the all or nothing mentality regarding spending. Start small and try to build up the business in a sensible, sound financial manner.

Lennox Lewis

I’m not a fan of people granting others power of attorney over their finances. I know sometimes certain situations warrant it, but I still don’t like it. I know a man who lost $150,000 by trusting someone in his circle, whom he granted power of attorney in a limited scope, yet the person wiped him out in tandem with another. All he can do now is sue, but the person already squandered his money on high living with nothing to show for it. There’s nothing to get back. Don’t let that happen to you.

Head Injuries

Muhammad Ali

Blows to the head impact the brain. Muhammad Ali, who is considered the greatest boxer of all time, famously wore out opponents by turning himself into a punching bag and I am of the belief it greatly contributed to him developing Parkinsons.

The brain is delicate. It is a part of the human body that does not easily withstand injury. I am of the belief head injuries sustained in combat, accidents and sports, as well as brain hemorrhages (aneurysm or stroke) greatly increases the risk of developing Parkinsons or Alzheimer’s. People with the aforementioned injuries are more prone to depression and regrettably suicide. It’s crucial that one recognizes the signs of depression early and seek medical treatment and therapy to ward off its effects.

Brain injury leads the body to release distress chemicals that triggers feelings of sadness, confusion, doubt and depression. Basically, it’s a distress signal. Your body telling you there’s a problem. Athletes in contact sports are more prone to depression. Head injuries some boxers sustain contribute to depression. This sometimes leads to drug use, such as cocaine, in failed attempts at feeling better. So, protect your head as best you can.

Steroids

Not only should you avoid narcotics such as cocaine and ecstasy, you should also shun steroids as well. You don’t want to win that way and performance enhancing drugs wreak havoc on the body. There are some who would supply you with steroids to get in good with you for financial reasons and to control you as well. You don’t need anyone holding that over your head or bringing that kind of stress into your life.

As much as some will tell you the steroids they offer are ahead of the proverbial game and no one will find out, don’t be too sure of it. It’s not worth your boxing career, not to mention distress to your family, friends, supporters, fans and yourself.

The same ones who will offer you performance enhancing drugs to give you an unfair advantage, swearing to you no one will find out or detect it during tests (due to detox, saunas ect..), are the same ones who will turn you in the minute you fail to give them what they want or do what they say. What happens when that same person asks you to throw a fight, damaging your career (betting). Stay away from steroids and those who would offer them to you. They have an ulterior motive. You don’t need to be anyone’s puppet or slave. Be your own independent person.

Work on your strength, stamina and skill. Let that be your winning ticket. And at the end of the day, it’s not the end of the world if you lose a fight. Ali and Tyson, two of the best boxers ever, lost fights. No one in their right mind would question Ali or Tyson's athletic ability or accomplishments in the sport.

Boxing is a chance for you to make something of your life. It's saved many from a life of crime. Properly parlayed into a professional career, it can successfully provide for you and your family, as well as give you great discipline and a sense of pride in what you have accomplished. Make it work for you. Don't allow outside forces to destroy you.

SPIRITUAL Family

Family plays an important role in God's spiritual plan. At some time or another, many do not spend enough time with their loved ones. Begin to change those patterns that separate you from each other for longer than you would like. Learn to spend more time with your family, loving them and teaching them God's ways.
