London's Trains Facing Overcrowding And Inoperability Due To Population Boom Needs A Solution

London

A recently released report indicates London's popular train system, known as the Tubes, faces inoperability in 15-years, due to the massive population boom the city and Britain as a whole has experienced due to being apart of the European Union. Immigration from Africa, the Middle East and a number of other nations also contributed to the population boom.

The transportation system in Britain is of a very high standard. It serves millions of people each day. All profits are placed back into the transportation system in an effort to improve service. The tube system is very extensive. It covers all corners. At times when there have been huge crowds seeking to access the trains, staff at the stations in question, such as the popular Oxford Street and Holburn, have asked patrons to wait a few minutes on the other side of the turnstile, before boarding. It is done in an effort to alleviate congestion.

It would be helpful for additional stations to be built to prevent the scenario of inoperability. As the tubes are often underground, surfacing at different points at street level, construction work could take place fairly unobtrusively. Another solution is to build longer trains. It would impact travel time to some degree, but it would accommodate more passengers.

Population rise to make tube 'inoperable' within 15 years

12 June 2016 at 1:10pm - London's soaring population could make the city underground tube network inoperable within 15 years, a senior tube manager has warned. In comments to engineering researchers at Imperial College London, reported by The Times (£), Miles Ashley, the Tube's programme director for construction said the growing numbers of people using the tube each year was an "incredibly serious problem". He said overcrowding is threatening to make the system "inoperable" within 15 years.

1.3 billion people used the tube in the past year, he said, compared to 800 million in 2002. Transport for London projections have found that by 2026, 30 stations across London would experience crowding greater than four people per square metre, by 2031, this would rise to 50 of the 62 stations in London. A square foot is the average size of a telephone box - so each passenger would feel as if they were squeezed into a telephone box with three and a half other people.

I don't know whether you have ever stood in a telephone box with 3 and a half or your friends...but ultimately that gives you an illustration of just how crowded parts of the these stations are going to be and the challenge that faces us. It renders it impossible.

David Cameron Will Not Seek Third Term As British Prime Minister

David Cameron and Boris Johnson

British Prime Minister David Cameron has announced he will not seek a third term in office as political head of state (The Queen is the sovereign head of state). Cameron made some tough decisions while in office, that some may not have agreed with, but it benefited Britain. Cameron made necessary budget cuts that have helped to turn Britain’s fortunes around. The nation is now posting positive economic growth, after the devastating 2008 financial crisis that began on Wall Street.

A popular conservative frontrunner for Prime Minister is London Mayor, Boris Johnson. When I was in London in 2012, I saw a gathering featuring him on Victoria Street and the public treated him like a rock star. People connected with the sometimes goofy, well educated politician. As goofy as he can be at times, Johnson has implemented a number of successful programs regarding transportation, recycling and housing.

Mayor Of London Boris Johnson Declines Paralympian Hannah Cockroft's Request To Spend A Day In A Wheelchair

Hannah Cockroft

British Paralympian gold medalist Hannah Cockroft challenged London Mayor, Boris Johnson, to spend a day in a wheelchair, to help understand the difficulties disabled people go through when taking public transport. Johnson politely declined her request, but expressed his willingness to work with the disabled to upgrade the London tube system.

Johnson is a brilliant man, but he's had a few little mishaps that became a source of national humor. Maneuvering a wheelchair all day is not easy and if Johnson were to accidentally crash into something or fall out of the chair, the press and public would have a field day and the true message of the exercise would inadvertently be lost. Hey, even Einstein had his clumsy moments. May I remind Hannah (LOL):

Off topic for a minute, the chicks certainly like him:

Having said that (LOL) Johnson is a good sport and an innovative mayor, who is set to move up the ranks

I've taken the tubes many times. They are very efficient and cover a significant amount of ground. I found it to be the best in the world. However, as the tubes were built in the early 1900s, elevator and wheelchair access were not incorporated into the system.

There are select stations with elevator access, but all tubes stations do not currently have this feature. Retrofitting would be a solution. It would take time and money, but with some inventiveness it could work. Some stations have two or more small offices. One could be retrofitted for elevator access, provided it lines up with the platform at a strategic location. Small structures could be added to stations, as an addition at each, housing an elevator and touch pass outlet. As stated above, it would take money, time and planning, but it can be done.

Boris declines challenge by Paralympian to spend day in a wheelchair

Last updated Fri 3 Oct 2014 - Boris Johnson declines a challenge by Paralympic champion Hannah Cockroft to spend a day in a wheelchair. She claims wheelchair access is so bad on the tube he would not be able to get to all of his appointments...

"The Mayor thanks Hannah for her passionate efforts to highlight the challenges wheelchair users face using public transport and will ask TfL to work with her to gain further understanding of the issues she raises.
He is very aware of the difficulties that are posed by our 150 year-old Tube network and that the picture for disabled people travelling in the capital is far from perfect.

London has one of the most accessible transport networks in the world, but delivering continued improvements is a key priority for the Mayor.

Retrofitting Train Lines

High speed rail (photo courtesy of The Infrastructurist)

President Obama is arguing with Congress regarding funds for America's first bullet trains. Already the proposal has been rejected by many in political circles. As a starter program for a bullet train, a preexisting line on an anemic, unprofitable route could be properly retrofitted.

It would save time and money, if done on a strict budget and negate the need for purchasing land and gaining permits for a new route, which has been a sticking point thus far. It would also have to be done properly to the highest standards to prevent accidents or mishaps. However, is the basic principle and technology is not that different. One is just an upgrade on a preexisting model.
